Remembering Kyle

(Feb. 1, 2023) It is with heavy hearts that we say farewell to skier Kyle Smaine, who tragically lost his life on January 29, 2023, in an avalanche in Japan. Smaine was our favorite skier. Outright, bar none. Our favorite skier to ski with, to watch ski, and to push the envelope of the sport. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all those who knew him, including our team at ZipFit. Below are some amazing photos from his close friend Brian Walker. We wanted to share these because they make us smile, cry, and appreciate.

Smaine was known for his smile and innovative approach to skiing. His smile is what made you want to get out and ski alongside him, then you would witness his craft. Skis were an extension of Kyle’s body and being, nothing looked quite as natural as Kyle skiing down a slope. He was one of the only skiers to routinely throw a switch 720 screamin’ semen in halfpipe comps, which still scrambles my brain when I think about it. After winning the 2015 world championships in halfpipe, Kyle left the world cup circuit to seek out a career as a professional big mountain skier, choosing human powered ascents and powder snow over the icy vert walls.

Kyle connected with the team at ZipFit through the Powder Magazine Powder Week in 2020. He was a dedicated athlete and worked closely with ZipFit around the design and launch of ZipFit’s first partnership with his primary sponsor, Fischer. Kyle’s best friend and photographer Brian Walker was by his side throughout his career, helping document his ski journey from South Lake to destinations world wide. The catalog of amazing images that Brian and Kyle captured are a beautiful homage to their friendship and Kyle’s contagious energy.

Smaine was a beloved member of the skiing community and was known for his infectious energy, positive attitude, and of course, his smile. His place in the sport will be felt for years to come, and his legacy will continue to inspire future generations of skiers. Among Kyle’s last words were, “smile more, it’s not that serious, skiing is fun as shit!”

The loss of Kyle Smaine is a profound one, and our thoughts and condolences go out to his wife Jenna, his family, friends, and all those who knew and loved him. He will be deeply missed. Don’t take a single day of skiing for granted. Smile. Appreciate it. Spread the love. Remember Kyle.

Brian and Kyle started a youtube series called “The Lost Boys” - it’s nice to revisit. Check it out below.
